Spain, in more than one climate

Madrid is not Barcelona, and neither is the country. A peninsula with several correct answers.

7 minute read · Desk edition, October 2026

Two capitals, neither of them a substitute

Madrid is inland, high, late to dinner, and serious about painting. Barcelona is a sea city with its own language — Catalan is not a dialect you are being difficult for noticing — and a modernisme trail that can eat a trip if you let every façade become a ticket. Choose on purpose. A first trip can be one of them done properly.

Andalusia, Galicia and the islands are other climates again. Seville in July is a decision about heat. San Sebastián is a decision about eating. This paper will not pretend a weekend in Barcelona has covered them. It will say: do not bolt Granada on for a night because the Alhambra is famous. The Alhambra wants a timed ticket and a city around it.

How a Spanish day sits

The long lunch is real, and so is the late dinner. A museum at opening time is the cool, quiet version of the city. A siesta is not a performance for visitors; shops in smaller cities may actually close, and you should have already eaten.

Trains are good. The AVE between Madrid and Barcelona is a few hours and a reservation, not an adventure. Use it if you have the days. Do not use it to pretend two great cities are one long layover.
