Travel · The north
Further north than Amsterdam
Stockholm, the Baltic, and a capital on an island that is not a day trip from Copenhagen.
7 minute read · Desk edition, October 2026
Do not staple the capitals
Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo are three countries that share a design reputation and not a weekend. Stockholm wants three nights if you are going to cross the water to the old town and still eat in a neighbourhood that is not Gamla Stan. Tallinn is a ferry from Helsinki or a short flight, and it is a Hanseatic city, not a toy version of Prague. Reykjavik is a gateway to weather, not a city you add because the fare was curious.
Summer light is a genuine advantage and a genuine problem for sleep. Winter is beautiful, short of daylight, and not a punishment if you came for museums and rooms. The prices are the ones you have heard about. Budget before you sit down, and then sit down anyway.
What the north is for
Design you can sit on, bakeries, harbours, and a seriousness about the public realm. Also silence, which visitors sometimes mistake for unfriendliness. It is not. It is the local volume.
Ferries in the Baltic are a real way to travel, with cabins and timetables, not a folklore. Book the one you mean. Do not discover at the dock that the romantic crossing was a truck route at two in the morning.
