The north, without collecting capitals

Amsterdam is the useful front door. Copenhagen is a different country. Do not staple them together to feel efficient.

One low country, properly

Amsterdam for four nights is a better northern trip than Amsterdam, Brussels and Bruges in a blur. The canal ring is a neighbourhood, not a boat ride you must purchase. Haarlem, Delft or a cycle path to somewhere with fewer selfie sticks will tell you more about the country than a second capital before lunch.

Brussels is underrated by people who only change trains there, and overrated by people who only see the Grand-Place at noon. It is a real city, a little bruised, excellent at beer and comic art and the business of being a capital of something larger than itself. Give it two nights or merely change trains. The halfway version is a waffle.

If you go further north

Copenhagen is worth the flight or the long train when Scandinavia is the point, not a trophy added to a Benelux weekend. It is expensive in the way the menus announce without embarrassment. Design, bakeries and a harbour you can swim in, in season, are the compensation. Sweden and Norway are further countries again — fjords are not a day trip from a Danish hotel.

Bicycles are transport in Amsterdam and Copenhagen, not a photo prop. Walk where the painted lanes say walk. The locals are not performing impatience. They are going to work.
