Cities you can do on foot

A short list of places where the hotel, the lunch and the monument can share a morning.

Scale is the luxury

Florence, Porto, Delft if you are based in Amsterdam, and the old centre of Prague reward a pair of shoes more than a day pass on a hop-on bus. Lisbon walks too, with the honest caveat of hills and cobbles that turn ankles in thin-soled shoes. Venice is entirely on foot, which is why a hotel on the wrong side of a bridge is a mistake you will repeat four times a day.

Paris and Rome can be walked in pieces. Treat each as a cluster of neighbourhoods, not as a single attraction with a metro underneath. Berlin is larger than its monuments suggest. Copenhagen is the right size. Madrid’s centre is walkable and its evenings are long; the heat at four in July is the limit, not the distance.

How to choose a base

Sleep where you want to be after dinner, not where the room was ten euros cheaper beside a ring road. One neighbourhood for the whole stay. Changing hotels mid-city to “see the other side” costs a morning and a bad temper.

If you need a station hotel, choose it because you have an early train, and only for that night. The rest of the time, live on a street that has a bakery you could imagine using again tomorrow. That is the test.
