The Adriatic, without a cruise
Walled cities that are extraordinary at dawn and unbearable at the hour the ships empty. Sleep there, or do not go.

A coast that is several countries
Venice, Split and Dubrovnik share a sea and almost nothing else administrative. Italy, Croatia: different currencies in the recent past, and Croatia is now euro and Schengen, which does not make Dubrovnik a suburb of Venice. The ferry exists. The fantasy of ‘the Adriatic in four days’ does not, unless you enjoy embarkation.
These cities were built for people who lived in them and later for people who arrived by ship for an afternoon. You can side with the first group by sleeping inside the walls, or just outside them, and walking early. The second group will still arrive. Your job is not to be in the main street when they do.
What a short trip can hold
One base. Split if you want a living city with a Roman palace used as a street plan, and ferries to islands that deserve a night of their own. Dubrovnik if the walls are the reason, with two nights so that one of them is not only the cruise hour. Venice if you are already in Italy and you have read the warning about luggage and bridges.
July and August are hot, booked, and loud. May, June and September are the honest months. A hire car along the coastal road is slow and beautiful and a bad idea on the day you also have a flight.
